About This Place

Nestled in the charming heart of Tomar’s Praça da República, Café Da Praça offers more than just a place to grab a drink—it’s a cozy social hub where locals and visitors alike can unwind and savor authentic flavors in a relaxed, inviting setting. This quintessential cafe-bar perfectly captures the leisurely Portuguese lifestyle, making it an ideal spot to watch the world go by while enjoying delightful refreshments and light bites.

The atmosphere at Café Da Praça is warm and unpretentious, with a spacious outdoor terrace that invites you to soak up the sun or unwind in the gentle shade while soaking in the picturesque square and historic church view. Customers frequently praise the friendly and attentive staff who make you feel genuinely welcome, responding with kindness and often engaging in playful cultural exchanges that add a touch of fun to your visit.

One of the most delightful surprises here is their unique local offering—the Tomar cider. Described as subtly sweet with herbal undertones, this drink captures the region’s character in a glass and offers a refreshing departure from the usual beverage options. Alongside this, savory snacks such as the well-crafted ham sandwiches provide just the right balance for nibbling while you relax, and for something a little heartier, the café’s pizzas have earned heartfelt praise for their rich, satisfying flavors and perfectly baked crusts.

Though not a full-fledged restaurant, Café Da Praça’s menu caters wonderfully to casual appetites, pairing well with the café’s laid-back yet vibrant vibe. The opportunity to write on the walls adds a quirky, memorable touch—letting visitors leave their own mark and feel connected to the space and the many stories shared here.

Cleanliness and comfort are clearly priorities, with an environment that welcomes both smokers inside and those preferring the fresh air outside. The thoughtful use of QR code menus presented in multiple languages enhances the ease and inclusivity of your experience, making this spot especially accommodating for international guests.

Whether you’re seeking a friendly corner to meet friends over a few drinks, looking to savor the local flavors, or simply wanting to relax in one of Tomar’s most beloved squares, Café Da Praça effortlessly delivers charm, warmth, and a genuine taste of Portugal’s hospitality. It’s a hidden gem where every visit feels personal and every moment is worth savoring.

I wanted to visit the pastry cafe next door but entered here by mistake. I did not regret as I enjoyed the interesting Tomar cider (shown in my photo) which tasted a bit sweet and herbal as described by the hostess of the cafe. Service was very friendly. The ham sandwich also tasted good. There is outdoor seating in the plaza. Not a lot of food choices here; it is more like a bar lounge.

Oh my the pizza was delicious staff very friendly to us English speaking folk, we shared the different ways we ask for some things and had a laugh when we each tried to replicate eachother did I mention the delicious Pizza? Nice to sit outside on this beauty day. Nice to use the QR code menu and have things in English or whatever works for you. Nice little square and church to gaze upon while eating. The church bells every 15 min are loud but I enjoy the noise.

Good views of the square, the st John's church. The convent up on the hill. Nice to relax there with a glass of wine. We have enjoyed many times watching the live Statues, the ice skating, the knights templar festival, local markets, from our seats at this cafe. Service and staff very good.
